An hour long private lesson is required for all new students, regardless of skill level. During this lesson, your instructor will show you how to safely lead your horse, groom, and put on a saddle and bridle. Riding will depend on your previous experience which you will discuss with your instructor during your first lesson.
We recommend students take lessons at least once a week to develop foundational skills. While we do find students make progress with one lesson per week, adding a second dramatically improves the rate of progress. Like with anything, the more you can practice, the better your skills can become!

Wearing the appropriate clothes for riding is very important! Come to the barn dressed and ready to ride. If you do not currently own riding specific clothing, regular athletic wear is acceptable. Laced/ secure footwear can be worn if you do not have riding boots.
Otherwise wear riding breeches, T-shirt to full length sleeves, and riding boots. Dover Saddlery in Medina has everything you need to get started in the sport!
Regardless of the season, it is recommended to dress in removable layers (nothing that goes over your head–helmets make these garments tricky to remove). No tank tops or cowboy boots.
It is strongly recommended to come with an ASTM approved riding helmet for your first lesson. If you are unsure if you will be sticking with this sport, we do have a few helmets at the barn which can be worn for the first few lessons. No bike helmets.
